Habilitation of Dr. Tim Florstedt

On May 16, 2013, ILF Research Assistent Dr. Tim Florstedt held his initial lecture (Antrittsvorlesung) on "Die Partnerschaftsgesellschaft mit beschränkter Berufshaftung im Sytem des Zivilrechts" at the Faculty of Law at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt. After the lecture Dr. Florstedt was awarded the the right to hold lectures in Civil, Corporate, Banking and Capital Markets Law and the title "Private Lecturer" ("Privatdozent") by the Prodekan Professor Dr. Georg Hermes on behalf of the Dean of the Law Faculty. Dr. Florstedt wrote his habilitation at the ILF on "A theory of subjective rights" under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dres. h.c. Theodor Baums. We congratulate Dr. Tim Florstedt on his habilitation and wish him all the best for his future academic career.

Visit by Zhejiang Financial College - Supporting the Chinese Dream

On May 14, 2013 the Vice-President of Zhejiang Financial College, Professor Jiang Jin visited the ILF with a delegation comprising Professors Wang Dongsheng, Xu Haijie, Xu Jing, Yu Zhaofen and Zhang Haiyan, to talk about a possible cooperation between both institutions. Zhejiang Financial College is located in the city of Hangzhou especially known for its beautiful scenery at the West Lake. Dr. Rolf Friedewald and Ms. Shen-Dee Kobbelt welcomed the delegation and spoke about the new program on European Banking, Securities and Finance law which is planned to start in October 2013 and is especially aimed at Chinese graduate students interested in learning about the European legal and business environment in a one-year full-time program.

Appointment of 4 New Members in ILF Board of Donors

Visit of Colombian Students from Corporación Universitaria Empresarial Alexander von Humboldt

A delegation of 13 Colombian students from Corporación Universitaria Empresarial Alexander von Humboldt, Colombia, visited the ILF on 6 and 7 May 2013. The students were received by Managing Director Dr. Rolf Friedewald and Program and Marketing Manager Ms. Shen-Dee Kobbelt. They were given an introduction to the workings of the ILF and listed to a presentation on the postgraduate programs offered at the ILF. Our Columbian alumni, Ms. Adriana Luz Perez and Ms. Angela Campana were also present to welcome the visitors who were especially interested in finding out more about the LL.M. Finance program.

After a tour of the House of Finance, they also met Dr. Susanna Pelster, Managing Director of the Law Faculty of Goethe University at the RuW Buiilding on Campus Westend.

During their 2-day visit, they also had the opportunity to attend a talk held at the Deutsche Bundesbank and to visit the Money Museum as well as the German Stock Exchange. Last but not least, a highlight of their 2-day program was the visit to the office of an ILF sponsor, the law firm FPS Rechtsanwälte & Notare where they listened to a lecture given by the managing partner of the Frankfurt office of the law firm, Dr. Robin L. Fritz.

The Institute for Law and Finance at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main offers a unique one-year graduate program leading to a Master of Laws in Finance. Up to 60 highly qualified graduates will be admitted for study so as to ensure academic excellence and direct personal contact between students and the faculty. ILF students are fully-enrolled members of Goethe University which confers the LL.M. Finance degree.

This program conducted entirely in English is intended for graduates with a good degree in law, business or economics, and who have an interest in combining theoretical knowledge with practical training in law and international finance. It overcomes the traditional separation of the academic disciplines of law and business/economics by teaching you aspects of both and focuses on their intersection and interplay. The program is international, interdisciplinary and an interaction between theory and practice. The faculty consists of both prominent academics as well as experienced practitioners from Europe’s legal and financial world.

The LL.M. Finance program which was established in 2002 also incorporates a special two-month internship with public and private institutions which support the ILF. These institutions typically include leading international law firms, banks, accounting and consulting firms, the European Central Bank, Deutsche Bundesbank, and BaFin (German Financial Supervisory Authority).

The ILF is located in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, the major financial center in Europe, provides the ideal location to train young professionals to deal with current and future legal and financial challenges.

8th Funds Forum Frankfurt held at the ILF

On 29 April 2013, the 8th Funds Forum Frankfurt was held at the Casino building of Goethe University Frankfurt am Main on Campus Westend. Prof. Dr. Andreas Cahn, ILF Executive Board Director, welcomed about 200 guests and the following participants of the panel discussion: Mr. Uwe Wewel (Head of the Unit Investments in the Ministry of Finance, Berlin) first started speaking about the regulations of the KAGB for closed-end special AIF. Thereafter, Ms. Patricia Volhard, (P + P Pöllath + Partners, Frankfurt, Co-Chair of the Legal Advisory Board and Member of EVCA, Member of the Legal Advisory Board of the BVK) described selected practical questions in terms of closed-end fund structures. The following panel discussion on the new regulatory environment and various issues was chaired by Prof. Dr. Cahn. The panel included Mr. Uwe Wewel, Dr. Stephanie Kremer (Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, BaFin), Ms. Dörte Höppner (Managing Director, European Venture Capital Association, EVCA), Mr. Christoph Stresing (Federal Association of German Venture Capital Association e.V., BVK), Mr. Gilles Dusemon (Partner, Arendt & Medernach, Member of the Legal Advisory Board of the ALFI) and Ms. Patricia Volhard. At the end of the panel discussion and after answering questions raised by the audience, the speakers and guests were invited to a reception and further in-depth discussions made possible by the friendly support of the co-organizers P+P Pöllath + Partners.

Visit from Representatives and Students of Croatian University Effectus

A delegation of university representatives and around 30 students from the Croatian university EFFECTUS visited the ILF on 26 April 2013 to find out more about the postgraduate education offered by ILF in the fields of law and finance, namle the LL.M. Finance. The delegation attended a presentation by Managing Director Dr. Rolf Friedewald and Program & Marketing Manager Ms. Shen-Dee Kobbelt on the academic activities of the ILF, the structure of the foundation and the contents of the LL.M. Finance program. The ILF staff was supported by the presence of a current ILF student from Croatia, Mr. Matko Maravic. The students of EFFECTUS were also able to participate in a lecture for ILF students on "Public M&A - A Comparative Approach" held by Mr. Patrick Kenadjian, Davis Polk & Wardwell and Dr. Alexander Georgieff, Georgief Capital. The representatives of EFFECTUS comprised the Dean Prof. Robert Kopal, the Vice-Deans Prof. Natasa Trojak and Prof. Vlatko Mickovic, the Secretary and Lecturer Prof. Goran Trbojevic and the Head of Student Service Office Ms. Ana Globocnik Zunac and Ms. Ana Mickovic, Marketing. A representative of the Croatian Consulate in Frankfurt am Main, Ms. Andrea Selendic, accompanied the group as she had initiated the contact between the institutions. The Dean presented the programs which are offered by EFFECTUS to its students and proposed a future cooperation between both institutions. The visitors were also welcomed by the Dean of the Law School of Goethe University Frankfurt am Main Prof. Cornelius Prittwitz and by the Managing Director Dr. Susanne Pelster. At a working lunch, the representatives of EFFECTUS introduced their university and the proposed cooperation with the ILF to Prof. Peter Sester. Finally, the students as well as the representative of EFFECTUS were given a tour of the facilities of the House of Finance, especially of the ILF library where the ILF librarian Ms. Janine Koch explained the structure of the library.

Commerzbank-Stiftung Visiting Professor Prof. Guido Ferrarini giving 2 public Guest Lectures

Prof. Guido Ferrarini is the Commerzbank-Stiftung Visiting Professor at the ILF in the Summer Semester. Besides teaching our LL.M. Finance students the course "European and Comparative Corporate Governance" from May to July 2013, he will also be delivering 2 public Guest Lectures on 22 May 2013 (Common Banking Supervision in the Eurozone) and 3 July 2013 (Reforming Securities and Derivatives Trading in the EU: Public v. Private Markets). Prof. Guido Ferrarini is Professor of Business Law and Capital Markets Law at the University of Genoa, Department of Law, and Director of the Centre for Law and Finance. He holds a J. D. (University of Genoa, 1972), an LL.M. (Yale Law School, 1978) and a Dr. jur. (h.c., Ghent University, 2009). He is a founder, director and fellow of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI), Brussels. He was a member of the Board of Trustees, International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) and an independent director at several Italian blue-chip companies. He was an advisor to the Draghi Commission on Financial Markets Law Reform, to Consob (the Italian Securities Commission) and to the Corporate Governance Committee of the Italian Stock Exchange. He has held Visiting Professor positions at several universities in Europe (Bonn, Frankfurt, Hamburg, LSE, UCL, Tilburg and Duisenberg) and the US (Columbia, NYU and Stanford), teaching courses on comparative corporate governance and financial regulation. He is author of many articles in the fields of financial law, corporate law and business law, and editor of several books, including the recent Financial Regulation and Supervision: A Post-crisis Analysis (with E. ILF Spring School Successfully Concluded in March 2013

The ILF sucessfully held its Spring School ("Frühjahrslehrgang") on the topic "Unternehmensrecht in der Beratungspraxis plus Fallstudie" for top law graduates without prior work experience from German-speaking countries from 4 to 15 March 2013. The Spring School ("Frühjahrslehrgang") was offered by the ILF in collaboration with law firms Ashurst, Debevoise & Plimpton, Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, Gleiss Lutz, Jones Day, Mannheimer Swartling, Mayer Brown, Shearman & Sterling, SJ Berwin, White & Case und Willkie Farr & Gallagher, as well as JUVE and Lexxion. It aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice while providing in-depth coverage of topics relating to legal consultation within the field of corporate law.

Guest Lecture by Prof. Dr. Stefan Braum, University of Luxembourg

On 11 April 2013, Prof. Dr. Stefan Braum, Dean and Professor of Criminal Law, Faculty of Law, University of Luxembourg was present at the ILF to give a talk on "Krise des Finanzsystems - das Strafrecht als Nothelfer?". Prof. Dr. Braum is a well-known expert in the field of European Economic and Financial Criminal Law. Prof. Dr. Dres. h.c. Theodor Baums, ILF Director and Prof. Dr. Cornelius Prittwitz, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Goethe University gave the welcome speeches at the event. Prof. Dr. Braum spoke about the fundamentals of the European as well as German criminal law in consideration of the recent experiences gained during the financial crisis. Subsequent to the lecture, there was a discussion amongst the participants chaired by Prof. Dr. Prittwitz on the practical applications of financial criminal law in Germany.
