Position

Dr. Johannes Paha is a senior researcher at the Department of Business and Economics at Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen where a holds a position as Privatdozent. He also is a research associate at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, and he consults companies in antitrust cases (mergers, abuse of a dominant position, agreements and coordinated conduct).

Special interests

Dr. Paha does research mostly in the fields of industrial organization, applied microeconomics, and law and economics. In his work, he has predominantly focused on collusion and competition law compliance programs while also having done work on stochastic optimization, econometric demand estimation, and vertical restraints. Besides using game-theoretic models, he has also employed econometric and numerical methods along with case studies and online surveys. He has analyzed, for example, the circumstances that facilitate price fixing and other forms of illegal collusion, and he has developed concepts for preventing such welfare-lowering conduct. He regularly presents the results of his research both to the scientific community and to practitioners working, for example, in the field of compliance.

Vita

After having studied in Giessen and Milwaukee, he holds both a German diploma and a US Master's degree in economics. After completing his doctorate in 2011 on the simulation and econometric analysis of collusive agreements, he did research at Johns-Hopkins-University in Baltimore and taught at Johannes-Kepler-University in Linz. During this time, he also held a 5-year fellowship at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Bielefeld. Dr. Paha completed his Habilitation in 2017 with studies on cartel formation and on competition law compliance programs. His most recent research has been on alternative forms of collusion such as information exchange or agreements on list prices. He has been working as an economic expert in competition cases since 2009.
