EU Supervisory Insurance Law

Course Description:

Guided by an historical outline, the first part of this course explains the fundamental principles, basic problems and some selected questions (e.g. technical provisions) of insurance supervision. Moreover, this part gives an overview of the current aspects of integrated supervision. The second part depicts the licensing practice and ongoing supervision of primary insurance companies under the EU directives, putting particular emphasis on the supervisory standard Solvency I. For this purpose, case studies are used. The third part deals with the supervision of reinsurance companies, insurance groups and financial conglomerates, and brings out the specific problems and backgrounds of these supervisory subjects. The fourth and final part is concerned with the works on the EU project Solvency II and, in this connection, gives an outlook on the future of insurance supervision.
