Timo Matthias Spitzer manages legal aspects of cross border transactions relating to corporate and investment banking, syndicated lending and global transaction banking (including trade, export and supply chain finance).


Mr. Spitzer studied law, economics and languages in Germany, England, France, Spain and New Zealand, where he earned an "LL.M. with Merit" focusing on International Economic Law at the Victoria University of Wellington. He qualified as Rechtsanwalt in Germany in 2008 and as solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales in 2011. Mr. Spitzer speaks fluent German, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.

Before joining Banco Santander, he worked for Clifford Chance, Linklaters and Norton Rose Fulbright and mainly dealt with acquisition, project and export financings as well as corporate lending transactions. Mr. Spitzer was seconded to legal and business teams at UniCredit in Munich and Citibank in London.

He is a regular speaker at renowned international conferences and events. In 2018, Mr. Spitzer gave an award-winning lecture at Harvard Law School which is also part of his course program. His professional excellence was repeatedly recognized by his inclusion in The Legal 500 General Counsel Powerlist. In addition, in 2019 Mr. Spitzer won the European Counsel Award for General Commercial Individual of the Year hosted by Lexology and the Association of Corporate Counsel, which recognized top in-house lawyers based on over 4,000 global nominations and peer feedback.
