ALUMNI STORIES & MORE: GET TO KNOW.....
Giorgio Carlucci, Alumnus 2016-17

What is your current job and your title?
Giorgio Carlucci, CFA (I completed the Chartered Financial Analyst set of exams between December 2019 and May 2022). I am now Vice President, ESG Advisory (Debt & Financing Solutions), at NatWest Group, London. I joined NatWest on their first ever “offshore” graduate scheme in Jersey in September 2017 (six weeks after completing the LL.M.) and I have held a number of front office and strategic roles since then.
What motivated you to apply for the LL.M. Finance program at the ILF?
A number of factors drew me to apply for the LL.M. Finance program. However, I was mainly driven by an eagerness to learn and grow as much as I could, and in doing so, seize the opportunity to potentially switch careers after my LL.B. in the UK. The vast array of internships on offer (I pursued mine at the ECB) helped me embark on a career outside of my area of expertise. Needless to say, the ILF’s credentials in the field played a crucial role, as the prospect of joining students from a variety of countries at a globally-recognised university appealed to me greatly. Furthermore, I looked forward to learning from and building long-lasting relationships with the ILF’s esteemed lecturers, the vast majority of whom practice or work outside of the university. This is one of the ILF’s most invaluable assets, as professors are able to share practical, real-life examples. In particular, I was eager to engage in finance-related modules along with exploring specific legal topics in greater depth. Finally, I was excited, as a European citizen, to move to a vibrant city in continental Europe and immerse myself in a new culture and language. I wish I had invested more time and effort in learning German though!
What advice would you offer ILF applicants or prospective students?
My advice is quite straightforward: I would strongly encourage applicants and prospective students to make the most of what is likely to be one of the best years of their life (it definitely was for me!). They’ll be faced with the opportunity to grow intellectually whilst making international friends for a lifetime (as cliché as that sounds) and, if they so wish, genuinely have fun. Similarly, I would urge prospective students to come together with a view to advance their careers as well as the ILF’s reputation. The alumni are quite friendly and insightful too – so why not connect?
What do you remember most with fondness during your time here at the ILF?
My answer to the above couldn’t be any more straightforward: classmates, staff and lecturers. The ILF is genuinely made up of people who are as nice, approachable and friendly as they are intellectually sharp - not an easy combination these days. Classmates, staff and lecturers make the LL.M. experience thoroughly enjoyable, with the state-of-the-art campus and excellent internships doing the rest. I genuinely miss the ILF and its people. I believe fellow alumni feel the same too, which is why a sizeable number of us still see each other or stay in touch on a regular basis, despite professional commitments and different time zones!
