ALUMNI STORIES & MORE: GET TO KNOW.....

Kristin Lyaskova, Alumna 2016-17

After completing my LL.B. in London and after Brexit, I was looking for a new challenge in continental Europe. My plan was to come to the ILF and then go back after I complete the LL.M. Finance program. Seven years later, I am still in Frankfurt and very happy with my choice. The ILF played a big part in my decision to stay - I never expected such a wealth of experience in one place and I never thought Frankfurt would offer such amazing job opportunities (most of which I would have been unaware of, if it were not for the wonderful lecturers, staff and the inbuilt internship at the ILF).

I am currently working as a Manager (equivalent to a senior associate if we are using the traditional law firm terminology) at PwC Legal in Frankfurt. I am admitted as a lawyer in New York, England & Wales and Ireland and work in the Financial Services Team where I assist international clients such as financial institutions, payment service providers and FinTechs on corporate governance and financial supervision and regulation topics as well as on cross-border capital markets and banking transactions.

What advice would you offer ILF applicants or prospective students?

Be prepared to learn a lot and meet many amazing people! After the wonderful time I had during my Bachelor of Laws studies, I did not think I would meet another group of people who would become my life-long friends. Frankfurt is a very international place but for those who wish to stay after the program, I would still advise to brush up on their German to maximise their opportunities. For those coming from a legal background, studying finance could be a bit of a challenge at first, I presume the vice versa is also true, but the knowledge you get at the end of this one-of-a-kind LL.M is really unparalleled precisely because of it!
