The ILF in cooperation with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP hosted the 3rd annual conference on Banking Union on 18 April 2016 at Campus Westend of Goethe University Frankfurt with leading experts including speakers from the European Central Bank, European Commission and Deutsche Bundesbank.
The welcoming remarks to the 3rd joint conference of the ILF and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP were made by Prof. Dr. Andreas Cahn, ILF Executive Director.
The first presentation on "The scope of consolidated supervision – the ECB and EBA powers in the SSM regulation" was held by Prof. Concetta Brescia Morra, Vice-Chair of the Administrative Board of Review of the European Central Bank. She was followed by co-host Dr. Gunnar Schuster, Partner, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, who spoke about “SREP capital ratios and due process”. The third lecture of the first panel “Financial Integration in Europe – EDIS and the finalization of the Banking Union” was presented by Dr. Andreas Dombret, Member of the Executive Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank.
The following panel discussion on the SSM, chaired by Prof. Dr. Andreas Cahn, consisted of the former speakers and Diederik van Wassenaer, Global Head Regulatory & International Affairs of ING Group. The latter opened the panel discussion with a short introductory speech.
After a lunch break, Prof. Dr. Jens-Hinrich Binder, University of Tübingen, opened the second panel with his presentation "Cross-border coordination of bank resolution”. Subsequently, John Berrigan, Deputy Director General DG FISMA of the European Commission, talked about “The role of the Commission in the Single Resolution Mechanism”.
The last lecture of the day was held by Dr. Alexander Glos, Partner, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, on “Bail-in, MREL, TLAC, EDIS – bank liabilities in a new world”. His speech was followed by a second panel discussion on SRM involving questions raised by the audience. This panel discussion was chaired by Prof. Dr. Andreas Cahn and consisted of the speakers of the second panel and Leonidas Fragkiadakis, Chief Executive Officer of the National Bank of Greece.
The conference was closed by a reception held for all speakers and participants. More than 160 participants attended the 3rd joint conference on Banking Union of the ILF and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP.
