The ILF together with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer hosted the 4th Annual Conference on the Banking Union on 15 May 2017 with leading experts including speakers from the European Central Bank, European Banking Authority, Deutsche Bank and Deutsche Bundesbank.
The welcoming remarks to the 4th joint conference of the ILF and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer were made by Dr. Rolf Friedewald, Managing Director of the ILF.
The first presentation on "Progress in regulatory and supervisory consistency in the EU" was held by Dr. Adam Farkas, Executive Director of the European Banking Authority. He was followed by Dr. Andreas Dombret, Member of the Executive Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank, who spoke about “The other side of the coin – why European supervision needs international regulation”. The third lecture of the first panel “Regulation and supervision in Europe – Many cooks, good broth?” was presented by Danièle Nouy, Chair of the Supervisory Board of the European Central Bank.
The following panel discussion, chaired by co-host Dr. Gunnar Schuster, Partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, consisted of the former speakers and Sylvie Matherat, Chief Regulatory Officer and Member of the Management Board of Deutsche Bank.
After lunch, Prof. Dr. Raffaele Lener, Partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, opened the discussion of the second panel with his presentation "Bank resolution in practice: the banking crisis in Italy”. Subsequently Prof. Christos Hadjiemmanuil, Professor of International and European Monetary and Financial Institutions at the University of Piraeus, talked about “The impeding review of the European resolution framework: the Commission’s proposals of 23 November 2016”. The last lecture of the day was held by Dr. Alexander Glos, Partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, on “Recent trends in resolution planning and resolution practice”.
His speech was followed by a second panel discussion involving questions raised by the audience. The panel discussion was chaired by Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Helmut Siekmann, Professor of Money, Currency and Central Bank Law at the Institute for Monetary and Financial Stability, and consisted of the speakers of the second panel.
The conference was closed by a reception held for all speakers and participants. More than 160 participants attended the 4th joint conference on Banking Union of the ILF and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
