5th Annual Conference on the Banking Union with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP on 22 November 2018

The Institute for Law and Finance together with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer hosted the 5th annual conference on the Banking Union on 22 November 2018 with leading experts from the financial sector such as the European Central Bank, European Commission, German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, Deutsche Bank, and academia. The welcoming remarks were made by Prof. Mark Wahrenburg, Professor for Economics and Business Administration of Goethe University.

The first presentation on "The Single Supervisory Mechanism: effective, transparent and accountable" was held by Ignazio Angeloni, Member of the Supervisory Board of the European Central Bank. He was followed by Dominique Thienpont, Legal Counsellor/Senior Expert for Regulation and prudential supervision of financial institutions of the European Commission, who spoke about "The Single Supervisory Mechanism - the established first Pillar of the Banking Union". The third lecture of the first panel "Future of EU and UK financial services prost Brexit" was presented by Rosa M. Lastra, Sir John Lubbock Professor of Banking Law, Queen Mary University of London.

The following panel discussion, chaired by Prof. Matthias Goldmann, Junior Professor of International Public Law and Financial Law of Goethe University, consisted of the former speakers and co-host Dr. Gunnar Schuster, Partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

After a lunch break Manfred Heemann, Director-General, Policy Issues, Legal Affairs and Committees relating to Resolution of the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin), opened the second panel with his presentation "MREL and TLAC: current state of the play and outlook on future developments". Subsequently Dr. Markus Benzing, Partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, talked about "Legal remedies in the SRM: Navigating the maze". His speech was followed by a second panel discussion involving questions raised by the audience. The panel discussion was chaired by Dr. Alexander Glos, Partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, and consisted of the speakers of the second panel and Karen Kuder, Managing Director of Deutsche Bank AG.

The conference was closed by a reception held for all speakers and participants. More than 120 participants attended the 5th joint conference on Banking Union of the Institute for Law and Finance and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
