Conference on Banking Union with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP on 4 May 2015

The ILF in cooperation with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP hosted a joint conference on Banking Union on 4 May 2015 at Campus Westend of Goethe University Frankfurt. The speakers consisted of leading qualified experts from the ECB, Single Resolution Board and Deutsche Bundesbank.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Cahn, Executive Director of the Institute for Law and Finance. delivered the welcoming remarks to this 2nd joint conference of the ILF and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP.

The first presentation on "The first six months of European banking supervision – The Lawyer’s perspective" was held by Dr. Klaus Lackhoff, Counsel of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP. He was followed by Jukka Vesala, Director General Micro-Prudential Supervision III of the ECB, who shared the ECB’s point of view in his speech "The first six months of European banking supervision – The ECB’s perspective". The third lecture "The first six months of European banking supervision – The NCA’s perspective" was presented by Dr. Andreas Dombret, Member of the Executive Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank.

The following panel discussion, chaired by Prof. Dr. Andreas Cahn, consisted of the former speakers and Eduardo Avila Zaragoza, Head of Global Supervisors Relations of BBVA. The latter opened the panel discussion with his talk about "The first six months of SSM from a supervised bank perspective".

After a lunch break, Dr. Elke König, Chair of the Single Resolution Board, opened the second panel discussion with her presentation "The Single Resolution Board – Insights from a start-up". Subsequently, Dr. Benedikt Wolfers, Partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, talked about "Money, money, money!" – Resolution Funds under the BRRD and SRM-Regulation". The last lecture of the day was held by Dr. Alexander Glos, Partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, on "The Single Resolution Mechanism – How many authorities are needed to resolve a bank?". His speech was followed by a second panel discussion involving questions raised by the audience. This panel discussion was chaired by Prof. Dr. Andreas Cahn and consisted of the speakers of the second panel and Dr. Michael Fischer, Head of Legal Department of UBS Deutschland AG.

The conference was closed by a reception held for all speakers and participants. More than 200 participants attended the 2nd joint conference of the ILF and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP.
