Workshop on "Key Concepts of German Private Law and Comparative Law" followed by Dinner at an Apfelwein Tavern on 24 October 2025

On the afternoon of Friday, 24 October 2025, ILF students were invited to an interative workshop on "Key Concepts of German Private Law and Comparative Law" held jointly by Dr. Mathias Hanten, Partner and Lead Banking & Financial Law at Deloitte Legal and Dr. Carlo Pöschke, ILF Research Associate.

In the first part of the workshop held by Dr. Pöschke , students were introduced to the German legal culture, the methods of German law and the basic structures of German private law. It focused on contract law, the law of obligations and property law of the Civil Code and was illustrated by some discussion of cases. A basic understanding of the German legal system not only broadens the horizons of our students, but also makes it easier for them to gain a foothold in the local job market.

In the second part of the workshop, Dr. Mathias Hanten, Partner and Lead Banking & Financial Law at Deloitte Legal, familiarized the students with the key concepts of comparative law. In a globalized legal order, where jurisdictions increasingly overlap, comparative law is indispensable – for scholarship, legislation, and legal practice alike. An insight into comparative law methodology can also be helpful for the master's thesis at the end of the academic year. The participants could apply their knowledge about their home jurisdictions as well as the knowledge they have acquired about German law.

After the workshop, all participants were invited by the ILF to dinner at a traditional apple wine tavern in the Sachsenhausen district, where students got to know each other better while enjoying typical Frankfurt food and drinks.
