Dr. Michael Huertas

 

Position

Dr. Michael Huertas LL.M., MBA, is a Partner with PwC.  As Head of Financial Institutions Regulatory Europe at PwC, he leads a group of multi-disciplinary, multi-jurisdictionally qualified and multi-lingual professionals who help clients navigate and realize the opportunities in the EU – and notably the Eurozone’s regulatory, supervisory and monetary policy framework. Dr. Huertas specifically advises on the Eurozone's Banking Union, the European Central Bank’s monetary policy activity and the EU’s Capital Markets Union workstreams, the EU’s Benchmarks Regulation reforms along with the regulatory and supervisory priorities of the European Supervisory Authorities. Dr. Huertas also has experience advising on conduct of business and governance arrangements (in particular, the managing of NPLs and non-performing assets), financial market infrastructure issues as well as collateral and custody arrangements.

His structured finance practice focuses on derivatives, securities financing transactions and securitizations.  His FinTech regulatory practice focuses on helping clients prepare for EU-level and national-level reforms as a result of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation and the Digital Operational Resilience Act as well as more generally questions relating to blockchain-based business models, DeFi, crypto-custody.

Dr. Huertas teaches the module “Consolidated Supervision” on the Master of Finance course at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management.

Vita

Dr. Huertas began his career in London working with Lloyds Banking Group before joining Latham & Watkins. Dr. Huertas returned to Frankfurt in 2013 and held positions with Allen & Overy as well as the European Central Bank prior to joining Dentons in Frankfurt as an equity partner, co-head and then head of the financial institutions regulatory practice group in Europe. Dr. Huertas is admitted as a Solicitor-Advocate (England & Wales), a Solicitor (Republic of Ireland) and as a German attorney at law (Rechtsanwalt). In addition to his PhD in Laws from Queen Mary University he holds an MBA in Banking from the University of London and an LL.M from BPP University. He completed his Bachelor (Honours) in International Business with Law and French from the European Business School.
